12/22/2008 Day of 9/11, United 23 - Additions as of December 22, 2001

Most of this week’s new entries again deal with the day of 9/11, shortly before which NORAD was preparing a major war game. On the day itself, the Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) called an air defence unit in Atlantic City, just before the first plane hit the World Trade Center, but the phone was not answered. FAA manager Ben Sliney began responding to …

12/15/2008 Day of 9/11, Londonistan - Additions as of December 15, 2008

Many of this week’s new entries again cover the day of 9/11. The control tower at Otis Air Force Base, from which fighters were launched to intercept the hijacked airliners, called Otis operations center shortly after 8:34 a.m. and the military liaison at Boston Center, Colin Scoggins, updated NEADS around the same time. After the first crash, FAA manager …

12/8/2008 Day of 9/11, Londonistan - Additions as of December 8, 2008

The main area for new entries this week is the day of 9/11. A sergeant at NEADS passed on news of Flight 11’s hijacking to colleagues at 8:38 a.m., after which NEADS technicians attempted to locate the flight. Flight 175 entered New York Center’s airspace, making radio contact, at 8:40 a.m., shortly after which the military liaison at Boston Center called …

11/24/2008 Day of 9/11 and More - Additions to 9/11 Timeline as of November 23, 2008

Some of this week’s new entries deal with the day of 9/11, pointing out that an air traffic controller at an aviation unit near the Pentagon saw two unidentified aircraft on radar around the time the Pentagon was hit, a helicopter crew stationed near the Pentagon was away for a traffic survey during the morning of the attacks, and most Washington National …

11/17/2008 Philip Zelikow, Neocons - Additions as of November 16, 2008

Several of the new additions to the 9/11 Timeline this week concern the 9/11 Commission, in particular its executive director Philip Zelikow, who played a significant role in shaping the commission’s take on assistance allegedly provided to the 9/11 hijackers by elements linked to the Saudi government. First, he blocked requests for interviews by …

11/9/2008 Saudi Tracking of 9/11 Hijackers - Additions as of November 9, 2008

All the new entries this week are about tracking of terrorists, in particular the 9/11 hijackers, as they moved between countries. Until the early 1990s, the CIA produced a Redbook that instructed immigration inspectors on how to spot terrorists by examining their passports. However, publication ceased just before the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which …

11/3/2008 Saudi Tracking of 9/11 Hijackers and More - Additions as of November 2, 2008

Several entries have been added to the 9/11 Timeline in the past fortnight, in particular concerning tracking of the 9/11 hijackers by Saudi authorities. Nawaf Alhazmi obtained a new passport in Saudi Arabia in March 1999. The passport contained an indicator the Saudi authorities used to track his movements. Alhazmi obtained a US visa with the passport and entered …

10/19/2008 9/11 Commission, Londonistan, and Day of 9/11 - Additions as of October 19, 2008

Several of this week’s new entries focus on the 9/11 Commission, in particular its Executive Director Philip Zelikow, who offered public support for the invasion of Iraq in 2002, but did not want the commission to investigate false claims of links between 9/11 and Iraq. After the commission’s investigation started, one staffer was sent to review …

10/13/2008 Homeland Security, Al-Qaeda - Additions as of October 12, 2008

This week’s new entries are a fairly disparate bunch, ranging from the 1997 appointment of a new CIA station chief in Germany, David Edger, to Laura Bush’s decrying the Taliban’s oppression of women, and her husband’s perceptive insight that poor people do not always become terrorists.

In homeland security, a 2003 study by Hilary Clinton …

10/5/2008 Bin Laden in Soviet-Afghan War, Day of 9/11 - Additions as of October 5, 2008

Several new entries have been added this week about Osama bin Laden during the anti-Soviet jihad in Afghanistan. In 1986, his brother Salem asked the Pentagon to supply him with missiles, but received no reply, although a Pentagon official did later ask Afghan commanders if resources should be diverted to the Arab Afghans. The bin Laden brothers purchased some …
